Please indicate below how the teacher scores on each characteristic that we find important.

2. The teacher's instruction is clear.

The teacher has a good explanation. Answers to questions are understandable. It’s always clear what to do when there is an exercise in class.

3. The teacher can motivate students.

The teacher makes you want to continue, doesn’t give you the feeling that you’re stupid, emphasises the benefits of what you’ve learned rather than making you feel bad about what you haven’t mastered yet.

4. The teacher is able to create a nice atmosphere.

Social interaction and humor make people come to class. It’s important to have a bit of fun with each other. The teacher has a good sense of humor and can create a nice group atmosphere.

5. The teacher is skilled with the technology.

The teacher is able to work smoothly with the technology: the slides, the videos, the Kahoot. Online: Zoom, making break-out rooms, sharing the screen.

6. The teacher can lead the group.

The teacher is able to balance dominant and introvert students, the teacher has control over the timing of the lesson, can keep discussions short if needed. The teacher has authority.

7. The teacher is able to keep the lessons interactive.

Because of ‘flipping the classroom’; it’s important that there are no monologues by the teacher! The more students speak and interact, the better.

8. The teacher has a good presentation.

It’s nice to watch and listen to the teacher. A well-groomed appearance, a clear pronunciation, an active / enthusiastic way of teaching. Online: good sound, a clear image: no mess in the background, no noise, good lighting, centered on the screen, looking into the camera.

9. The teacher is competent.

The teacher knows the profession of Dutch as a Second Language well: is experienced, knows answers to relevant questions, can give examples to make something clear.

10. The teacher is well prepared.

The teacher knows the educational materials well, is able to answer questions about the homework. Knows the purpose of exercises. The teacher has the right pdf’s, videos, materials ready at the right moment.

11. The teacher is relaxed.

The teacher remains calm when something doesn’t go as planned: when there is a technical failure, doesn’t lose temper when a student doesn’t understand. Is able to keep calm when there is tension between students.

12. The teacher is able to prioritise.

The teacher is able to focus on the most important things. We’ve created more exercises than fit in a lesson. The teacher is able to make the right choices for the group. The teacher does not lose time answering questions that are too deep or irrelevant to the current level. The teacher is able to keep the grammar instruction short in order to have more time for speaking exercises.

13. The teacher is well-structured and punctual.

Our organisation has worked out the total plan of the course and the lessons. The teacher is able to present this plan. The structure is clear to the students. The teacher is punctual: the lessons start and finish in time. In case of changes, the communication is clear.

14. The teacher believes in the programme.

For our audience of higher educated learners, we believe in the benefits of intensive courses, video for parts of the instruction, ‘flipping the classroom’, using an instruction language (English) to explain grammar, offline: 100% focus by offering course+accommodation. And we believe in the materials that we created. The teacher shares these believes.
